S90v is easy to sharpen, I'd say easier than the other two you listed because it will wear significantly less. Just like it is easier for someone who is in shape to train for a marathon versus an out of shape person. I think s35vn is too similar to s30v to matter, and I think s30v is close to worthless.Re: M390 vs S90V. by attila » Tue Oct 11, 2022 11:02 pm. The only advantage M390 has over S90V is corrosion resistance, and S90V is no slouch with about 440C level corrosion resistance. I wish I had gotten one of them Chiefs. Ah yea ok, that makes sense. I had it backwards according to BHQ. Edge retentions the same, S35VN is tougher, but not as corrosion resistant as S30V.See more S30V steel knives S90V. This is a powder-metal steel also produced by Crucible. It's very hard and exceptionally difficult to sharpen. The benefit of this, of course, is that the steel ...Here's the short answer: Maxamet has great edge retention, but is expensive and not corrosion resistant. CPM-S110V is comparatively more balanced, with good edge retention, great corrosion resistance, and decent toughness. If you need great edge retention, Maxamet is better. If you need corrosion resistance, try S110V.Hardness. Maxamet is vastly harder compared to S30V steel. Maxamet can attain a hardness between 68-72 HRC when properly heat treated, while S30V reaches a maximum hardness of around 58-64 HRC. The ultra-high hardness of Maxamet steel is enabled by its very high alloy content including 10% cobalt and high 6% vanadium. The steel is the innovative version of Crucible's S30V steel, both of these steels belong to the SxxV series of the company. ... CPM S35VN vs S90V. S35VN is innovative steel that beats S90V in corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening and toughness level by having a better chemical composition. However, S35VN falls weak in edge retention in ...S90V vs Cru-Wear: The Bottom Line. Assessing S90V and Cru-Wear properties, there's no clear winner as such. Both steels have their strengths and drawbacks. Hence, the choice between the two depends on specific user requirements. S90V shines when it comes to wear resistance and edge retention, though it's tough to sharpen.S110V is kind of an odd one. On paper it should have better edge retention than S90V since it has more carbides, but due to a variety of factors it didn't perform as well in real world situations. It's far harder to sharpen, chips more easily, and quickly loses a keen edge in favor of a toothy one. So in actual use, many people found their S90V ...S90V vs S110V. S90V steel exhibits almost identical characteristics to S110V steel and they are both considered premium steel. The only slight difference which is very minimal is that S110V steel beats S90V in edge retention and corrosion resistance. S90V steel shines on toughness slightly over S110V steel but you will not go wrong with either ...M4 will get & hold an edge a little better but "can" be susceptible to corrosion at blade edge (if not used regularly) & leser etching. It also has higher toughness meaning it absorbs energy better. Less chippy edge & will dent/gouge vs snap. S30V is a good all around/balanced knife steelS30V has superior edge retention compared to 154CM due to its higher hardness rating on the Rockwell C scale (HRC). S30V has an HRC rating of 58-60, while 154CM has an HRC rating of 54-59. This means that S30V can hold a sharp edge for longer periods, making it an excellent choice for heavy-duty tasks. But, when it comes to official hardness, the S30v will, in the main, be stronger depending on the heat treatment applied. When it comes to reaching a breaking point, VG10 has been known to chip, whereas S30v is more likely to bend under extreme pressure. Both steels are hard enough for most tasks, but S30v is ultimately stronger in most cases.S30V and 52100 are not the same fruit. Without the actual HT specs, they could be very different final blades. 52100 at RC62 will out cut rope against S30V at Rc58. The tests you listed are oly cutting tests, there are other parameters dealing with edge duration, toughness, corrosion resistance, etc.K390 Steel VS S90v Steel Corrosion Resistance . S90v steel is much more resistant to corrosion than k390 steel. Edge Retention . When it comes to the edge retention, both k390 steel, and s90v steel are about the same. Both have excellent edge retention, so you will not lose out by picking one or the other here. ToughnessHardness. S90V steel contains a significantly higher amount of vanadium at 9% compared to 4% in 20CV steel. This leads to S90V achieving notably higher hardness values, with optimal heat treatment resulting in around 66 HRC hardness for S90V compared to 59-61 HRC for 20CV. However, for practical knife application, crucible data …S30V is a knife steel produced by Crucible, released at the end of 2001 [1]. Crucible has been a part of the knife steel industry for many decades, such as with steels like 154CM which was developed in the late 1950’s and gained popularity in knives through Bob Loveless in the early 1970s. I wrote about the history of 154CM in this article. Both S30V and 154CM are high-quality steels with excellent corrosion resistance and edge retention. While S30V generally offers slightly better edge retention and toughness than 154CM, the difference is not significant. It features incredible edge retention and wear resistance, and very high corrosion resistance. It is a very expensive steel, and only comes in top of the line knives. CPM-S90V's extreme wear resistance is due the incredible amount of Vanadium in the alloy, and as ...Learn the differences and similarities between two popular knife steels: CPM S30V and CPM S90V. Compare their composition, hardness, toughness, corrosion resistance, edge retention, and ease of sharpening.Everything depends on heat treat of course. But S90v is much harder to sharpen than 20cv, it’s more prone to chipping, and when it loses its fine edge, it has the tendency to become toothy. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just depends on what you want. 20cv is all around the much better steel imo. 7.This is why you’ve got S30V as more “edge retentive” in your charts than Magnacut, while Pete has Magnacut as between M390 and K390 in actual, true, “edge retention”, that is a …Here is the short answer: S90V, when compared to M390, is going to have better edge retention and wear resistance. However, M390 is a tougher, harder, and more corrosion resistant steel. Overall, either steel will perform great, but if you were to choose one, then M390 would be the better choice. I wouldn't claim anything conclusive about S90V without actual data, but the S110V data does suggest that toughness-wise, it should be in the ballpark of 20CV.S90V could be called a super steel (at least thats what I call it) while S30V is a great steel and better for ease of sharpening, you will however have to sharpen it more and it wont take as good of an edge as S90V. Though the margin of difference between the two is not that great it is noticable. 195K subscribers in the knifeclub community ...On the other hand, S90V was more comparable to S30V and S35VN steels, with adequate but not exceptional corrosion resistance. The lower chromium content of S90V is beneficial for wear resistance by enabling more vanadium carbide formation, but it reduces corrosion resistance compared to M390. ... S90V should have considerably better edge retention at the expense of some corrosion resistance. For most people the corrosion resistance won't be a problem, it's just that 20CV is excellent vs just good for S90V. They both should have comparable toughness.154CM is generally easier to sharpen compared to S30V. The higher toughness of 154CM makes it more forgiving during the sharpening process, allowing for easier restoration of the blade's sharpness. S30V, being a harder steel, may require more effort and skill to achieve a finely honed edge. 8.CPM CruWear vs S30V Steel Hardness. CPM S30V and CPM Cru-Wear are both air-hardening tool steels that can achieve high Rockwell hardness levels, making them suitable for wear-resistant applications like knives, cutting tools and dies. However, S30V generally achieves slightly higher hardness than Cru-Wear. S30V can be hardened to around 60-64 HRC through a proper heat treatment.Regular Price is $149.95.
