J. Jonnyd Discussion starter · Mar 26, 2018. Hi All, I'm having trouble starting my 5420. The issue started out intermittently where it would fire when turned over and the shutdown immediately. Eventually after a couple of tries or after starting it with the throttle raised it would continue to run and act normal.Do a voltage check at the starter terminal when the key is turned to the start position. A bum ground can cause the same issue. You didn't mention what the OEM is on the mower engine, but most LT155's came with a 15HP Kohler. Fedup is correct there is usually a black wire coming out of the blower housing that grounds the magneto to kill the engine. All ignition switches have a terminal marked "G" (ground). The rate of drop knob is located just above the floor boards directly below the operators seat. (just in case you weren't aware). You need to see if that is getting 12VDC to it and if it clicks, what the voltage is now on that large red wire once it clicks. It could easily be a neutral safety switch. Wayne. Turn the key to on but do not crank. You will hear the click of the fuel pump. Observe the fuel bowl on the side of the engine until it is completely full.
