It appeared to have work hardened and shattered. I don't remember having any trouble getting the broken parts out of the differential. The big problem I had was getting the brake drum off the broken axel. It is a press fit with a very large Woodworth Key in it. It had a cut out relay, which is about 1/3 the size of most regulators. The 3 way light switch charged at low charge pushed in, by using a resistor in the switch.
